Hi All,
Guess that fabulous fall weather is finally a thing of the past. It's
sleeting as I write and it pitch dark at 4:31 PM. Won't be long before the
days start to lengthen which is a good thing but as my father says, "when
the days begin to lengthen the cold begins to strenghten" which is a not so
good thing.
Re: the Skyline Farm poster. I learned to ride at Skyline in the late
1950's and then taught riding there from 1961-65. T-Ledge in SP and Skyline
were really the only two riding stables in the area then and when Skyline
put up the indoor that was really big news.
I'm on the Board at Skyline and we are involved in a Community History
grant/Maine Memory Network project. We needed photos of the riding stable
era thus the decision to have a Reunion. So far everyone is thrilled with
the idea and I wonder if you who have riding clients would photo copy the
poster and post it in hopes that the older riders from this area might be
alerted. Many thanks.
Other news: I've stopped twice at Laura Searway's to see the sawdust mix
that she's trying out and have missed her twice. Will make an appointment
so I can let you know
what she thinks about the mixture and if picking it up is feasible.
On to the manure/compost dept. Kelly has started the pilot project at the
transfer
station. She's about ready to take her loaded dump trailer to the transfer
station for the 3rd time where the manure will be incorporated into the
compost windrows. Going to be hard to do in the winter months as the maunre
will freeze in the trailer, ah life in Maine in the winter.
There is an interesting ad in the most recent Horse's Maine which
reads:
"GOT MANURE?"
We'll buy it and haul it away!! Southern Maine Area.

I visited Walnut Hill on Saturday and saw the new outdoor riding ring which
is slightly frozen at the moment with all the rain/cold. It's located behind
the indoor arena in a very nice quiet location. Kathleen told me about their 4-H
group and I asked her for an article for "What's Fresh." She also has had
her horse loving little girl students wearing pink to their lessons and for each
rider wearing pink, she has donated money to fight breast cancer. This
project has raised $400.00+ She needs to tell the world about these little
girls and their horses.
Don't forget, there's a CFA meeting on Monday night at 7:00 at the Bowery
Beach school. All are welcome. I'll be away for part of the winter so will
need someone to stand in for me on the CFA Horse Farm committee.
Wishing you all--- buckets that don't freeze, delicious nutritious hay, and
no icy paddocks,
Sheila
