News from the Cape Farm Alliance regarding horses. Next CFA meeting is Nov. 16th, all are welcome. Kelly,
Bethany and I were at the Nov. 2nd meeting.
Cape Public Works Director Bob Malley is willing to support a pilot project working with Mark Butterfield
who is in charge of the composting at the "dump" and one horse farm. The pilot program would work on
incorporating horse manure into some of the windrows of compost at the Transfer Station. Kelly Strout's Shady
Oak Farm has agreed to take part in the pilot program as she has a trailer which she can load with manure and
haul to the dump. This may be helpful to more of us in the future if the addition of horse manure produces a
superior compost. There is another town in the Waldoboro area that is already adding horse manure to their
compost so our project will add more information on how it works.
Kelly has also looked into the costs of getting delivery of 1100 forty pound bags of pine pellet bedding. It
comes on pallets of 55 bags shrink-wrapped, tarped and shrink-wrapper again so it can be stored outside.
Buyer is responsible for unloading the pallets from the semi so this is not a project without work...Ah well,
what isn't with horses? Cost when she got the estimate was about $1.50 less than buying bags at retail. Are
any of you interested in following up on this type of cooperative venture? What about vaccines/wormers
from the drug supply places?
We need an article in the Cape Courier about road laws/courtesy with regard to horseback riders and drivers.
For those who ride on the roads, it can be a scary experience. I'm sure Beth would take a photo or two of a
group of riders with hands raised trying to get a driver of a car, truck, or landscape truck&trailer to slow down.
Courier article submission schedule is Nov. 17th, Dec. 8th Jan. 5th. Could someone take this on as a project to
alert the driving public that because of the nature of the horse, we're all in danger unless we're very careful.
Doesn't have to be a long article (250+ words)and the picture(s) would be very important to drive home the
message.
Neither Kelly nor I will be at the Harvest Dinner on Nov. 13th due to previous commitments. Hope the horse
community will be represented since we provide some of that "rural beauty" that Cape residents love.
Are there other people who should be receiving this CFA information about horses in CE? If so, who? I did a
write up complete with photo about the October E-quest ride and the day of pleasure driving at Spurwink
Farm for the recent "What's Fresh?"
Beth, I have two e-mail addresses for you. Which is best?
Anyone have an e-mail address or phone # for Laura Searway? I'll take a copy of this by for her tomorrow and
get her e-mail address if she's there.
Tally ho,
Sheila
