Saturday, May 3 – Potato planting party to welcome spring and feed the hungry
All grownups and kids are invited! Work from 9 am til 12 noon, then join us for a potluck lunch, followed
by workshops and farm exploration in the afternoon. The event is a collaboration between Cultivating
Community, Farm Camp, the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust Education Committee, Cape Farm Alliance,
Kitchen Gardeners International, and the Schoolground Greening Coalition of Portland Trails.

About the Farm
Three pioneering enterprises share tenancy at Turkey Hill Farm, and although each has a unique mission,
they are all passionate about bringing people closer to food that nourishes and the land where it’s grown.
Cultivating Community, Farm Camp, and Eat by Design cultivate several acres of the 27 acre farm, which
is tucked behind a long line of woods along Old Ocean House Road.  Turkey Hill is a certified organic
farm.

Craig Lapine believes that “Good things happen when people know where their food comes from,” and
he works with young people to help them discover this in a hands-on way. Cultivating Community utilizes
more than an acre of land at Turkey Hill Farm to teach participants how to grow and  distribute food. In
the process, he says, they learn to be good stewards, citizens, and leaders, while receiving a stipend for
their labor.

The operation at Turkey Hill produces 72 different types of  vegetables, staying busy from the beginning of
the growing season until late fall. The harvest is distributed to low income elders and vulnerable families in
Greater Portland.

Cultivating Community currently has a range of offerings in the Winter/Spring 2008 Cape Elizabeth
Community Services catalog. Click here for catalog:

The Cultivating Community Youth Growers program is open to teens between 14 and 17, and recruiting
has begun for the 2008 season.  There will be four sessions this year, beginning in May. Click here for

Farm Camp teaches environmental literacy to preschool and elementary school children through guided
exploration of different habitats and fun activities. Kids learn about growing, harvesting, and eating organic
vegetables and about feeding and caring for farm animals. Nature based-literature for children is also
incorporated in the program.

David Buchanan is a devoted advocate of local food production. He knows that the flavor of food and its
quality suffers when it is picked too early and transported long distances. His Eat by Design project
encourages small-scale farming using heritage varieties of New England vegetables selected for their taste.
David works with farmers, backyard gardeners, and local chefs to promote and boost production of these
special vegetables, and he also nurtures them in the fields of Turkey Hill Farm to assure that the seeds they
produce are preserved for future generations.

History
Turkey Hill Farm has been owned for over 80 years by the Eastman family. Though not farmers, the
Eastmans have long been committed to good stewardship and on-going agricultural use of the land. In
2003 the family entered Turkey Hill into the FarmLink program of
Maine Farmland Trust to assure that it
would remain a working farm.
